When you are a parent you spend a lot of your time looking after other people and it can be hard to find time to do things for yourself. Carving out some time for yourself though is important, because it helps you to remember who you are and what you love doing. The risk that comes with dedicating your time to everyone else, is that you can start to lose yourself. Even if you can only find around an hour or so a week to do something that you love, it will help you to retain your own sense of self. Here are some tips on making some me time as a mom:
Decide what it is you want to do
Before you work out how you are going to get the time to do your own thing, you need to work out what that thing is. It could be that you want to go to an exercise class once or twice a week. Maybe you want to carve out some time to read or write some interesting articles or stories from online magazines like Vision Magazine, or you just want the chance to take a long hot bath. It could be an activity that you loved before you had a family or something new that you want to try. Whatever it is, it is a good idea to know what it is so that you can work out when the easiest time that you can implement your me time.
Ask for help
If you want to go out during the evenings to a class, or just want someone else to be ‘in charge’ while you are getting on with your thing in the house, ask for help. This could be you asking your partner to look after the kids during this particular time, and you will do the same when they want to do something. This will give you both the opportunity to plan out your week and both get some ‘me time’ out of it.
If you are unable to ask your partner, you could ask other family members or your friends. If they have children you could also help them out if they want to do something. You should never be afraid to ask for help, because the worst anyone can say is no, and the best is that you will get the chance to do something that you really enjoy.
Take advantage of bedtime
Sometimes the easiest way to fit in some me time, is when your children are in bed. This is especially a good idea if the thing that you want to do more of is something that you can do at home. It is a great guilt free way to dedicate an evening to yourself without feeling that you are letting anybody down. It can also be a great way to help you to wind down and relax and get to sleep yourself.
Get up a bit earlier
If your children have a specific time that they wake up most mornings, try to get up half an hour before that. You can get some me time in before they start their day. It can be a great time to have a shower on your own, do a bit of yoga or exercise that you find from a youtube video. Anything to get your day off to a good start. Just think, will you be any less tired if you stay in bed half an hour longer? Probably not, and instead you can feel compelled to get on with your day.

Use your commute to work
If you have to use public transport to get to work and back every day, this could be a great time to go something for yourself as there are plenty of activities that you can do when you are on the move. Read a book, listen to a podcast, crochet. Using the time wisely will turn your commute from something that can feel tedious and annoying, to a moment of calm where you can relax a little.
Get into a routine
Whichever way works out best to carve out some me-time for yourself, make sure that it gets added to your daily routine. It shouldn’t be something that you will do if you manage to get time for it, it should be something that you make time for. Having some time for yourself is just as important as everything else, and can stop you from burning yourself out.
With these tips you will be taking over motherhood and taking names, just remember to make yourself a priority.
