When we think of vacations, we imagine plenty of fun in the sun, food and drink, relaxing and lots of indulging. However, while vacations are no time to stick to strict diets and health plans, it is vital that we don’t go too crazy – not only can it take us ten steps backwards with our health, it can make us feel tired and sluggish, which is something no one wants when they are on a dream vacation. Which is why I created a list of great vacation health hacks for your next trip!
Staying hydrated is absolutely essential, particularly if you are visiting a hotter climate than you are used to. Drink at least eight glasses of water a day, more so if it is hot, you are active, or you are drinking alcohol, as all three of these can lead to dehydration. Make sure to check whether the local tap water is safe to drink; there are lots of online sources to check. If in any doubt, be sure to stock up on bottled water from the supermarket.
It can be tempting to stay up late and sleep through the day, but maintaining a decent sleep schedule while on holiday is essential. Make sure you are getting enough quality sleep, otherwise you won’t come home feeling relaxed and refreshed. Remember to factor in time-zone differences and adjust your sleep schedule accordingly.
Take those vitamins
Travel, particularly by air, can take its toll and combined with a new holiday diet and foods, your body may not get all the nutrients it needs. Make sure to take Hundred personalized vitamins, just in case the food isn’t quite what you hoped for. Taking a supplement will help keep your body healthy.
Hit the hotel gym or pool
Maintaining an active lifestyle is important, even when on vacation. If your hotel has a gym or pool, put aside 30 minutes a day to do a workout or take a swim. If you’re a night owl, take a plunge at night, or if you’re an early riser, squeeze in a brief dip or quick workout before everyone gets up for breakfast.
Hire a bike
A superb way to explore the local area and get in some cardio, ask your hotel concierge where the nearest good bike hire can be found. Before you start pedaling, be sure to familiarize yourself with the road etiquette (including which side of the road to ride on!).
Choose the right food.
Though it’s tempting to try a bit of everything, especially if you are at an all you can eat resort, try to choose healthy options for breakfast and keep your portion size moderate, avoiding items like cooked meats and fried foods. If you are feeling hungry during the day, save a banana or grapes from breakfast as a healthy snack to keep you going until lunchtime.
While vacations are the perfect time to relax and chill out, staying healthy and active will make sure that you have the best possible time and come home feeling relaxed and refreshed and ready to face the real world again.
