I am starting this new feature, every thursday I am going to reflect on my perspective of parenting. I guess a little thought journal on how I look at things, and swim my way threw the choppy waters that is parenting my two wild boys. Now you may not agree with me, I obviously don’t expect that but I do expect a supportive environment and lots of laughing.
LOTS of laughing. Promise?? You better.
My first instalment of……. (drum roll please…..)
Will be on kids reading… or really getting my kids to read in general.
My boys are very creative, love stories, love being swept away in the land of imagination. What they don’t clearly enjoy is sitting still. Not to mention they have no interest to learn to read on their own.
This needs to change. I have no idea if this is a boy thing… where books aren’t as interesting as the rest of the world. I mean, I get it, we are in the generation of electronics, amazing graphics, loud bright toys and 3D movies… how on earth can a book compete?? But this is just getting annoying, I find it so hard to get them to sit with me and focus, especially my eldest ironically.
Talking with other moms of boys I hear similar complaints and knowing my own hubby this is all very true. Thankfully they also tell me of a light at the end of the tunnel, I may be pulling my hair out a little now; but he will grow up and eventually be a bookworm like his father once was before the teen years got him. If you know my hubby you know how crazy an idea it is to even see him pick up a book.. he is not a reader. He was once though.
Anyways at eldest’s school we do this home reading thing, reason I am talking about this, and we have to get THEM to read to us. Well read with them really and I need to make this a fun activity. I need a reward system, so I am starting a bargaining tactic. For every twenty minutes of reading he does he gets a half hour of video games.
A simple win, win I am thinking. Face it stickers on charts haven’t cut it since he was potty training and I certainly don’t want to stuff the kid full of cookies so this seems like the best idea for us. Remember what Mumfection is all about, finding what works “perfectly” for your family. I hope that this will be the “perfect” plan for our little clan!
What do you do to encourage your little ones to read?? Or are you lucky with a true born bookworm??
