Picking Wedding Flowers

Weddings are an endless list of things to do and all of us hope that in the end it will all pay off. One of the biggest decisions you have to make for your big day is picking wedding flowers. There are so many things to consider from centerpieces to bouquets and it can be very overwhelming.

For myself I knew I needed to get some help and thankfully I had an idea of what I was looking for. I thought.

Of course there are a few things I needed to decide on before even thinking about the types of flowers.

Shape

Round – just like it sounds this type of bouquet is a simple round shape above with long stems below. A pretty universal style that looks classic on any bride. A great option for any look if you are wanting something basic to go with a complicated or detailed dress.

Pageant – if you are looking for something with a little more of a princess feel the pageant is a great choice. A bouquet you cradle along your arm giving you lots of great options for vines and unique designs.

Cascade – One of my favorite choices this beautiful arrangement gives you a fairy like feel as you walk down the aisle. I have loved the ones I have seen with white and peacock colored flowers flowing out of the brides hands. A truly great way to make a statement.

Nosegay – Traditionally a bouquet that has more greenery than flowers in it this is a great option for any bride. Being very versatile this is a great way create a great neutral colored bouquet (something that I liked best for my own choice which I will get to).

Pomander – If you want something that is completely different a pomander or “kissing bell” is exactly the choice for you. I have even seen these double as a purse so you can hide your phone and extras inside without an issue. It is a flower all with a hanging ribbon for easy carrying. They are a great idea for bridesmaids and flower girls too!

Real Flowers vs. Faux

This is a big debate and there is no right answer because the right answer depends on each and every bride. For myself I have decided to use Faux flowers for my bouquet so that I can easily keep it forever as a keepsake and so can my bridesmaids. Each option has their pros and cons but for my big day I knew that this was going to be the best idea and the most cost effective.

For me my beautiful mix of cream colors, greens and whites will match beautifully with my dress choices. I also have to admit that I really loved the look of this particular bouquet as it was very anne-of-green-gables and I know that my late mother would have loved it. When I got mine in the mail I was so happy to already have such a big decision checked off my list, they looked perfect and I even have two others for my bridesmaids!

Season timing & Allergies

As I said before the main reason most will choose faux over real is allergies and this is something that you really need to think about for your guests. Especially if you have fresh flowers at each table. If you know there are some flower allergies it is always my best suggestion to be better safe than sorry and avoid fresh. But if you don’t have any constraints the only thing you need to think about now is what flowers and to start building up your list of choices you need to consider your wedding date. You need to think about what flowers will be in season on your wedding date and if you want to import flowers you’ll need to consider the extra costs associated with that when they aren’t in season in your area.

Comfort

This might be the most overlooked thing when it comes to bouquet choice: how comfy it is to hold. After all you and your maids will be holding them for many many many hours and you need to make sure they sit well in everyone’s hands. If you don’t you are going to be hating it within an hour of your wedding so make sure everything is tied well, smooth and not too heavy!

Hopefully with this advice you will be well on your way to making the best choice for your wedding and if you are looking for more tips you need to check out my WEDDING GUIDE for more!
